A gynecological surgeon is a doctor who specializes in female reproductive health. They diagnose and treat issues related to the female reproductive tract. This includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and breasts.

Anyone with female organs may see a gynecologist.  80% of those who see one are between 15 to 45 years old.

Why do you need to see them?

A visit to the gynecologist is recommended for annual screening and any time a woman has concerns about symptoms such as pelvic, vulvar, and vaginal pain or abnormal bleeding from the uterus. Conditions commonly treated by gynecologists include issues relating to pregnancy, fertility, menstruation, and menopause.

What do they do?

Some gynecologic surgeries are simple and may be done at the gynecologist’s office, while others are done in the hospital. Common gynecologic surgeries include:

  • Tubal ligation (tubes tied)
  • Removal of ovarian cysts (non-cancerous growths on an ovary)
  • Removal of cysts or fibroids (non-cancerous growths) in the uterus
  • Removal of growths from the cervix (the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina)
  • Uterine artery embolization, which cuts off the blood supply to a uterine fibroid so it gets smaller
  • Removal of the uterus (hysterectomy), ovaries, or other parts of a woman’s reproductive system
  • Surgical treatment of gynecological (cervical, uterine, and ovarian) cancers
  • Cystoscopy, which is a procedure that lets the doctor look inside the urinary tract to check for growths, bladder stones, or other problems
  • Hysteroscopy, which is a procedure that lets the doctor look inside the uterus by inserting a thin tube through the vagina and cervix

Physician consultation is a good opportunity and you should be prepared for it.

  • Carry all necessary medical records for the discussion. It helps in better understanding your heart condition and avoids repetition of diagnostic tests.
  • Make sure you discuss your past medical history, surgical history, family history, and medications that you are taking.
  • Discuss about your lifestyle habits, dietary habits and also about your profession. Your lifestyle and nature of job may be associated with the risk for cardiac diseases.
