Dermatopathologists are doctors who use microscopes to look at samples of skin, hair, and nails to diagnose diseases. Their specialty, dermatopathology, is a combination of “dermatology,” the study of the skin, and “pathology,” the study of disease.

Dermatopathologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing skin conditions. You may want to see a dermatopathologist if you have skin conditions such as changes in a mole, stubborn acne, hives or rashes, scars from blemishes or scrapes, skin irritation, ingrown nails, fungus, or hair loss. What do they do?
To do their job, dermatopathologists have to use a number of microscopes including light microscopes, electron microscopes, and fluorescence microscopes. They use these tools to get a closer look at things like cellular scrapings, tissue sections, and skin lesion smears. By doing this they can diagnose disorders of the immune system, infectious diseases, degenerative diseases, tumours, and more.
Dermatopathologists are more like researchers than they are medical doctors. They don’t treat conditions directly. Instead, they offer information to the doctors who send them samples for analysis. The conditions that dermatopathologists may diagnose include basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, psoriasis, and alopecia areata.
